Happy Earth Day

So Lucia and I have been asking you to give up your EARTH DAY Tips, so here are FOUR things I think everyone can do!

1)

Save Energy With Your Jeans
This odd little vid from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)—which features a couple boogeying down to the "Tecktonic," a popular new dance in France—offers advice on how to you can consume up to five times less energy by wearing your jeans at least three times, washing them in cold water, and skipping the dryer or the iron.

2)

Drink filtered tap water with a reusable water bottle: Over 38 billion plastic water bottles end up in landfills every year. By switching to filtered water and a reusable bottle, each person can prevent up to 3,200 plastic water bottles from ending up in a landfill every year. 2. Recycle and create a compost pile: Recycling and composting food diverted 82 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 2006. Turn your kids into recycling and composting experts by putting them in charge of your household’s efforts. It will teach them about responsibility, as well as sustainability.

3)

Send Directions to Your Phone, Save Paper. Both HopStop and MapQuest allow you to send travel directions directly to your cell phone or PDA, so you don't have to print a thing.

4)

If You Are Going to Travel, Do It Green
A. If you have to fly, book direct: Because taking off and landing requires a tremendous amount of fuel, flying direct is eco-friendlier than making stop-overs.
B. Unplug the wall-warts before you leave: Many appliances and electronics, even while on standby, still use a huge amount of so-called vampire energy.
C. Travel light: This will make it easier to take public transportation and get around.
D. Keep up the good work: "Don't check your green habits when you check in," the article notes. Just because you might be staying in a hotel, you still need to remember to turn off the lights when you leave the room, and turn off the air conditioning.
